Neurodivergences

Other Neurological & Developmental Conditions

These are also considered neurodivergences but are sometimes listed separately.

Synesthesia: A perceptual phenomenon where stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second pathway (e.g., seeing letters in color, "tasting" words).

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD): A condition where the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information from the senses. It can exist on its own but is also very common in Autism and ADHD.

Intellectual Disability (formerly known as Mental Retardation): Characterized by limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.

Global Developmental Delay (GDD): A diagnosis for children under 5 who show significant delays in several areas of development.

Non-Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD): A condition characterized by a significant discrepancy between strong verbal skills and weaker motor, visual-spatial, and social skills. (Note: It is not in the DSM-5 but is recognized by many clinicians).
